| | Choosing a Sea KayakSea kayaks are terrific choices for all levels of experience and are the most versatile type of kayak. Sea kayaks can be used in the ocean or on a large, open lake and are available in several different sizes and styles. Before buying a sea kayak, you should first consider what type of kayaking you plan to participate in. There are sea kayaks designed specifically for day trips, touring, and even surf kayaking. If you are new to the sport of kayaking, you may want to begin with short and simple day trips. A recreational sea kayak between eight and fifteen feet in length will be ideal. These compact kayaks are lightweight and affordable, and spacious enough to carry along your weekend gear. Touring kayaks are generally longer than a recreational kayak, but are typically more narrow. These boats are normally constructed of fiberglass, so they are even more lightweight, and the extra length makes it possible to transport more gear. Touring kayaks are great for extended kayaking trips that last several days and cover many miles. There are also expedition kayaks available that are more portable, often folding up to pack or inflatable. This type of kayak is good for international traveling or other kayak camping trips that include other means of transportation besides kayaking. Other types of kayaks that you may consider are surf kayaks, racing kayaks, and several other kayaks designed for specific activities, like fishing. Surf kayaks are short, usually no more than 8 feet long, and very easy to maneuver. The bottoms are typically flat to allow the kayak to surf over waves much like a surfboard. Racing kayaks are built for speed and don’t handle as well as other sea kayaks. They are extremely long, usually up to 23 feet long, and are more narrow. If you plan to use your kayak for another activity, you may want to look into other specialized types. Once you have a general idea of what type of sea kayak you are in interested in, it is time to gather your own knowledge about the available kayaks that meet your needs. Spend some time looking through kayaking magazines and websites for reviews and recommendations on sea kayaks. Talk with other paddlers about their own kayaks and personal recommendations to get a better idea of what you may want. When you have narrowed down your choices to a few different kayaks, it is time to take them for a test drive. Visit a store that allows you to sit in the kayak so you can determine the comfortableness. Friends or relatives who own kayaks may let you try out their boat to aid in your decision. The best way to try out your kayak before buying is to rent sea kayaks you may be interested in from an area boating outfitter. You may want to make several trips in various rental kayaks before making a purchase of your own. When you do buy your sea kayak, don’t forget a lifejacket and kayaking paddle. If you plan to travel with friends, a Coleman Two Way Radio will make communication easier on the water. These radios are designed for boating. Not only are they waterproof up to one meter, they float rather than sink if dropped. | |
