In 1886 a wild fire, possibly ignited by a lightning strike, destroyed an entire swath of hillside and a burgeoning yet unnamed mine North of Clark. The steep hillside eroded quickly, exposing the black rich dirt beneath. Attempts to restart the mine were thwarted by periodic mudslides, yearly avalanches and increasingly sketchy terrain.
